Shutting Down
Submitted by selectsplat on Tue, 10/20/2009 - 11:43The EduResources Weblog will shut down in December (at the same time that Radio Userland the server support site shuts down). I will continue to operate my more general weblog at The Open Learner. I'm pleased that there are now many fine guideline sites to open academic resources for students and teachers (see the list of Recommended Weblogs) which did not exist when the EduResources Weblog was launched in 2002. Many thanks to all the readers who consulted EduResources. ____JH
Vint Cerf on the History and Future of the Internet
Submitted by selectsplat on Tue, 10/20/2009 - 11:06As I begin to wind down this weblog it seems appropriate to reference this video by Vint Cerf on the history and future of the Net. I can remember participating in the early Usenet and with radio packet switching systems and with early newsgroups. The technology has certainly made things easier for current computing! ____JH_____

Private and Online Calculus and Algebra Tutors
Submitted by selectsplat on Tue, 09/01/2009 - 10:34Many students need a tutor to help them with calculus and algebra. Finding the right tutor for your student can be done in a few different ways. One option is to find a tutor who will come to your home and work with your student in person. This is sometimes a good choice for a student with difficulty paying attention because the tutor can see when the child is no longer focusing on them and re-gain their attention. Some students' main problem is paying attention, and there are some private tutors that specialize in working with this type of student. Using this type of tutor can be highly effective for a student with an attention deficit disorder since they will be working with a professional who specializes in the subject matter and the disorder at the same time.
Another option to find a tutor for calculus or algebra is to locate one online. An online tutor teaches the subject matter on a website instead of in person. On these sites you chose the subject matter and look into the credentials of the available online tutors. This can be beneficial in an area where finding a tutor can be an obstacle due to proximity. This is also a way to shop different tutors until the right fit is found. There are different methods to teaching every subjuct, so finding a good fit between the student and the tutor is very important. Having multiple tutors to shop from can help to make the best choice for your student. This can make a world of difference to your student by improving their grades and boosting their confidence. It is an easy process to go online to determine which type of tutor is right for your family.

openly licensed and a great deal more in the public domainand the
problem is that a lot of people still dont know about them or how to
use them.

Blackboard Loses on Appeal
Submitted by selectsplat on Tue, 07/28/2009 - 12:10Inside Higher Ed reports on Blackboard's latest loss, which is good news for universities and colleges who use open source software because we can be sure that despite their disclaimers, Blackboard would certainly move against open source courseware if they succeed against Desire2Learn and other private companies. Blackboard's loss is also an affirmation of common sense since anyone with long-time experience in course management software knew that Blackboard's patent claims were simply assertions, not valid original contributions to courseware delivery methods. ____JH____
